What's the difference between a lithium battery protection board and a lithium battery BMS?

The lithium battery protection board and the lithium battery BMS (battery management system) have some obvious differences in function and role, even though they're both made to protect the battery.
Functional Differences
The lithium battery protection board:
Its main function is to give basic battery protection, like overcharge protection, over-discharge protection, and short-circuit protection. It keeps an eye on the battery's voltage, current, and other parameters and cuts off the circuit when something's not right with the parameters to keep the battery from getting damaged. Lithium battery protection boards usually are small and don't cost much. They work well in places where battery protection needs aren't too high.
The lithium battery BMS (battery management system):
Besides the basic battery protection, a lithium battery BMS has more advanced features, such as monitoring the battery's state, estimating the power left, balancing the battery, and managing the heat. The lithium battery BMS can keep track of the battery's voltage, current, and temperature in real-time and make accurate estimates and management of the battery's state through algorithms. It can also balance the battery to make the battery pack more consistent and make the battery last longer. The lithium battery BMS usually costs more and has a more complicated structure. It's good for places where battery management needs are higher, like in electric cars and energy storage systems.
Differences in Working Principle
The lithium battery protection board:
The working principle is pretty simple. It mainly uses circuits made of electronic components to monitor the battery's voltage, current, and such parameters. When the parameters are abnormal, the circuit gives out a control signal to cut off the battery's power or change the circuit state to protect the battery.
The lithium battery BMS (battery management system):
The working principle is more complicated. It usually has several modules like data collection, data processing, and control strategies. It gathers the battery's voltage, current, and temperature parameters through sensors and processes the data through algorithms. Based on the analysis results, the lithium battery BMS makes the right control strategies, like changing the charging speed and doing battery balancing, to make the battery work better and last longer.
Technical Complexity
The lithium battery protection board:
It mainly depends on hardware protection and is made up of IC, MOS, resistors, capacitors, and other things. The technology is simple but very useful, especially in protecting the battery from getting hurt.
The lithium battery BMS (battery management system):
It combines battery management software and has more functions and smart operations. The technical complexity is higher and needs more advanced algorithms and data processing techniques. It can do better battery management and optimization.
Differences in Application Scenarios
The lithium battery protection board:
It's widely used in all kinds of portable electronic devices, like mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and so on. It's also used a lot in small power systems of two-wheel, three-wheel, and four-wheel local electric vehicles. These devices don't need very high battery protection, so the lithium battery protection board is enough.
The lithium battery BMS (battery management system):
It's mainly used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, big UPS power supplies, and other places where there are high requirements for battery management. These places have high demands on the battery's performance, safety, and reliability. So a more complicated and advanced battery management system is needed to make sure everything is okay.
There are big differences between the lithium battery protection board and the lithium battery BMS in function, working principle, and application scenarios. When choosing which battery protection solution to use, you need to think about the specific needs of the application and the characteristics of the battery all together.
