Chery Launches Kunpeng Battery, Solid-State Battery Expected to Hit the Market by 2026

On October 18, Chery held the 2024 Global Innovation Conference, during which it officially launched the Kunpeng battery series and revealed that the development of solid-state batteries is also underway. The company expects targeted operations in 2026 and mass production by 2027.

Chery introduced three categories within the Kunpeng battery lineup: square lithium iron phosphate (LFP) series, square ternary series, and large cylindrical ternary series.

• Square Lithium Iron Phosphate Series: Energy density of 120-160Wh/kg, fast charging performance of 1C-6C, pure electric range of 200-600km, and a pure electric range of 100-200km for plug-in hybrid and range-extended models.
• Square Ternary Series: Energy density of 140-200Wh/kg, fast charging performance of 2C-6C, pure electric range of 600-800km, and a pure electric range of 150-300km for plug-in hybrid and range-extended models.
• Large Cylindrical Ternary Series: Energy density of 140-240Wh/kg, fast charging performance of 2C-6C, pure electric range of 700-1200km, and a pure electric range of 150-300km for plug-in hybrid and range-extended models.

Additionally, Chery disclosed plans to implement full solid-state batteries in vehicles by 2026, with a pure electric range of over 1500km. Regarding the progress timeline, Chery stated that in 2024, the energy density of full solid-state batteries will reach 400Wh/kg, rising to 600Wh/kg by 2025. The company expects to begin targeted operations in 2026 and achieve mass production in 2027.

Images shared during the event showed that a sample of the corner-cut full solid-state battery, even after damage, did not catch fire or short-circuit, continuing to function normally.

Since the beginning of 2024, Chery's development of power batteries has significantly accelerated. The company has established two battery firms: Anhui Qida Power Battery Technology Co., Ltd. in April and Shijiazhuang Qida Power Battery Technology Co., Ltd. in August, both wholly owned by Wuhu Qida Power Battery System Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Chery Automobile.

In addition, Chery's independently developed battery company, DeYi Energy, has established two battery project bases in Tongling and Wuhu, Anhui. The first phase of a 5GWh lithium battery production line in Tongling reached full capacity in October, and the second phase has already begun construction. The overall capacity will be 17GWh, with seven production lines planned and a concurrent energy storage product line with an annual capacity of 5GWh. Products will cover platform cells such as 100Ah for range-extended models, 125Ah for 800V pure electric, and 175Ah for 400V pure electric platforms.

Regarding solid-state battery technology, earlier reports indicated that Chery, together with Gotion, has invested in the industrialization of semi-solid-state batteries through their jointly held company Anwa New Energy. These batteries have an energy density of 300-340Wh/kg. As for full solid-state batteries, Chery has yet to provide a detailed technical roadmap during this event.

With the debut of the Kunpeng battery series and the announcement of progress in solid-state battery development and implementation plans, Chery is accelerating the establishment of a full ecosystem from battery R&D to vehicle manufacturing. This strategy enhances its competitiveness in the new energy vehicle market by strengthening its capabilities in the power battery field.
